Clinic with Carl Allen

(Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016)

Carl Allen Clinic

On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the CHS Jazz Bands welcomed Carl Allen, renowned jazz musician, drummer and music educator, to CHS!  Carl Allen is a former director of Jazz Studies at the Julliard School, and has worked with numerous accomplished musicians, including Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, George Coleman, Phil Woods, the Benny Green Trio and Rickie Lee Jones.    (click HERE for more info and background)

The clinic included:

3:30 - 4:30:  Drummer's Clinic

4:45 - 5:45:  Jazz A Band (Big Band)

6:00 - 7:00:  Jazz Combos (Combos 1 and 2, 30 min each)

Mr. Kohen was most impressed with the instruction and the engaged participants, and hoped that each of our young musicians were "freshlyinspired and motivated to dig in".  He sent an email to each participant, stating:  "Here are a few takeaways I thought I would share with you:

1) Sing
2) There are no shortcuts
3) Embrace The Journey
4) Be a mature musician - take individual responsibility
5) Play with intention
6) Know the music and the musicians you are studying"

See some of the pics from the clinic:

....and finally, also from Mr. Kohen, "Here are a few of the many people he mentioned today that you should all become familiar with, so check out a video or two before our next meeting:

Max Roach
Art Blakey
Philly Jo Jones
Mel Lewis
Ed Shaunnessey
Billy Cobham
Freddie Hubbard"
